On religion

I posted this as a comment in response to someone yesterday, and thought I would like to keep it. Feel free to comment, but know that I won't be changing my mind on anything.

Organized religion has some benefits. It teaches children the values and wisdom we ourselves believe in, brings us together with people of like mind, and controls the morality of a populace. For the same reasons, it can all backfire and cause huge injustice and suffering.

I believe that 'real' religion is something in your heart which is between you and the creator and nobody else's business (also called 'concience' or 'holy spirit'). I believe that there are spiritual laws from which the physical laws sprang; i.e. Karma - every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I believe that our 'real' lives are on the other side of the veil, and that we are sent here much as a child is sent to school - to learn.

I believe that it is important to aid the world in accordance with our ability and talents. That we should 'account for our existance' by working in some way, whether or not we have enough money, and whether or not we are working *for* money. I believe that it is better to be kind and giving than to be a hermit. I believe that sincere prayer is heard and that meditation has benefits beyond our ability to comprehend. I believe that 'light working' also has benefits beyond what we can imagine.

Everything else is just trappings. Well, almost everything else.
