This movie is peopled by characters who are ludicrously funny, soul-baringly poignant, and unbelievably horrible. In other words, people. At the extremes of what they can be. In my opinion, it is perfectly cast, perfectly played, and perfectly directed.
There is nothing in it that a viewer needs to be wary of; no real violence comes on the screen. Yet the violent side of human nature is dealt with. Right alongside a probing of our deepest needs and highest ideals. And places, sometimes, where the two collide.
